HORIZON FAMILY MEDICAL CELEBRATES TOURO’S 1ST GRADUATING CLASS

Horizon Family Medical Group (HMG) applauds the 117 medical students who recently received Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degrees from Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) in Middletown. It is the school’s first graduating class.

HMG also celebrates its long affiliation with TouroCOM. Beginning in 2012, HMG was instrumental in the founding of the school and its opening in August 2014. Jim Olver, MHA, Chief Executive Officer at HMG, said, “We were there from the beginning and now to see our students graduate is heart touching and very rewarding.”

The students completed a rigorous four-year medical education and earned the tenth highest scores in the country on their first licensing examination (COMLEX-1). Graduates will complete residency programs at leading hospitals including New York Presbyterian, The Cleveland Clinic, Tufts, Baylor, Case Western and Walter Reed Army Medical Center to name a few. The students matched in residency programs representing 17 different specialties and spanning over 22 states. TouroCOM students help author research papers, plan and staff public health fairs, coordinate medical missions abroad, and start their own campus and community organizations.

HMG plays a key role in the education of TouroCOM students. Dr. Alex Joanow–a founding partner of HMG and an Obstetrician/Gynecologist with it–is Director of Clinical Rotations at TouroCOM. In addition to his administrative duties at TouroCOM, Dr. Joanow is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Osteopathic and Manipulative Medicine at the school.

As Director of Clinical Rotations, Dr. Joanow oversees the medical education of TouroCOM third-year students who are in clinical clerkships at hospitals and sites in New York and Connecticut. Dr. Joanow also evaluates those sites, one of which is HMG.

Dr. Joanow said, “We are extremely proud of our inaugural class of new physicians. It has truly been an honor to be involved in the evolution of the school and their education. They exemplify everything that is good in medicine. As a result of their recent successes in the National Residency Match, they will have an immediate national impact in the field of medicine”

Dr. Kenneth J. Steier, Founding Dean of TouroCOM Middletown, said, “We are extremely proud of our first class of graduates from TouroCOM. They are exemplary in their dedication and commitment to medicine. We are also thankful for our partners like the Horizon Medical Group, who provide the clinical opportunities necessary to train our students.”
