Mount Saint Mary College Students Learn From The Pros at Madison Square Garden

January 9, 2020 – NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Nearly two dozen Mount Saint Mary College Business majors took the All Access Business Tour of Madison Square Garden in New York City, where they got the inside scoop from the pros.

Mount mentors who attended were Scott Russell, assistant professor of Sports Management, and Kathleen O’Keefe, director of the Mount’s Career Center.

The tour included a walkthrough of the Knicks and Ranger locker rooms, as well as some of the special seating available in the venue. Students also enjoyed a history lesson, complete with a rundown of notable performers and athletes who have graced Madison Square Garden.

The students met with the venue’s human resources recruiter and learned about jobs, internships, and other roles within Madison Square Garden. They also attended a panel discussion with three current employees who shared information about their career paths, corporate culture, and general advice for post-grad success.

“There’s a lot of different jobs at Madison Square Garden,” said Victoria Veloz-Vicioso of Englewood, N.J., a Mount Business student of the five-year MBA track. “I learned that you don’t have to be a Sports Management major – there’s a lot of opportunities.”

Through a donation of $1,575, a friend of the Mount covered the cost of the tour and the transportation for the students. The gift was secured thanks to the efforts of Margaret Treacy ’13, director of Annual Giving at the college.

After touring Madison Square Garden, the Mount group headed to Learfield IMG College, a collegiate sports marketing company based in Plano, Texas with an office in New York City. Mount alumna Nicole Corbett, ’12, a digital account manager at Learfield, discussed her experience at the Mount and her career path, which included internships with the Hudson Valley Renegades and the Walt Disney Company, as well as jobs with Army West Point Athletics and the New York Yankees.

“Students learned about jobs and internships with the company and were able to ask a lot of questions,” noted O’Keefe. Corbett “was fantastic.”

Kyle Robbins of Wallingford, Conn., a Business Management and Marketing student at the Mount, said the benefits of the trip were manifold.

“From this trip I gained an experience of witnessing the sports industry firsthand, and it also allowed me to gain insight on what organizations such as MSG and Learfield IMG are looking for in potential candidates,” he explained.

In addition to the Mount’s Career Center and School of Business, the Student Business Association assisted with the marketing and success of the trip.
